How do back injuries cause leg symptoms and sciatica?
Lower back injuries are often felt in the leg, becuase the nerves that supply sensation and power to your legs emerge from the lower back. Herniated discs (aka “slipped discs”), hypertonic muscles, spinal stenosis, tumours and infections can all irritate / damage the nerves that supply the legs.

What leg symptoms might I experience?
Common symptoms include a dull ache in the low back, buttocks and thigh which becomes a sharp pain on particular movements. Pins and needles, numbness and skin hypersensitivity are also common. The area of the leg that is affected depends on which level in the spine is injured. If the sciatic nerve is affected by an injury in the lower back then the symptoms will often be in the back of the leg and can go as far as the foot. This is called "sciatica". More serious injuries can cause the leg to feel heavy or weak.

How do osteopaths treat sciatica?
Ben Posen (BOst) osteopath, successfully treats sciatica and other leg pains caused by lower back pain and injury, using a range of approaches including:

  • Joint mobilisation - to promote greater range of movement in the back and free trapped nerves.
  • Deep soft tissue massage - to reduce muscle spasms
  • Postural guidance and safe exercises - to make your body stronger and more flexible, so that your symptoms don’t keep coming back.
